Mrs. Vivian Mote Shuman, 90, died Saturday morning (September 26, 2009) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was a native of Carrollton, but she moved to Waycross from Macon in 1947 and helped her husband operate their drug store. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated from Georgia Teachers' College with a degree in education. While her children were in grade school, she was a teacher at Waresboro High School and 6th grade at Crawford Street Elementary School for 8 years. When her children left for college in 1962, she opened Waycross Fabrics and became a wonderful seamtress until her retirement in 1985.

Mrs. Shuman was a member of First Baptist Church, Heritage Quilt Guild, Brooks United Methodist Church Busy Bees, and the Grandmother's Club. She enjoyed playing bingo at Kroger and quilting, but she will be also remembered as an avid sports fan who loved to put on a ball cap, make some nachos and cheer with the best of fans, especially for the Georgia Bulldogs!

She is the daughter of the late William Oscar Mote and Willie Maude Lyle Mote. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Pasco Shuman; and three siblings, Hazel Grist, Selby Mote and Sybil Landers.

Survivors include one daughter, Theresa Shuman of Waycross; one son, Ted Shuman (wife Wanda) of Waycross; three grandchildren, Jon Parker (wife Vicki) of Waycross, John Blackard of Valdosta, and Julie Cantila of Waycross; two great grandchildren, Phoebe and Jack Cantila; beloved pet, Molly; one brother, Harold Mote of Decatur; one sister, Joyce Brown of Marietta; two brother-in-laws, Max Grist and Guy Landers; a dear friend and caregiver, Bob Skinner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (September 29, 2009) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The Brooks United Methodist Church Busy Bees and Heritage Quilt Guild are asked to meet 10:40 a.m. at the funeral home to serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church, 702 Elizabeth St., Waycross, or Brooks United Methodist Church Busy Bees, 400 Pinehurst Dr., Waycross, GA 31501.
