Rev. David R. Simmons, 72, died suddenly Tuesday night (August 5, 2003) at Satilla Regional Medical Center.
He is a native of Trenton, NJ, but he has lived most of his life in Waycross. He was a retired minister, owner of Simmons Insurance Agency, and the department superintendent of street and drainage for the City of Waycross. He served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict where he received the Purple Heart. During his service, he also claimed the title, Golden Gloves Champion. He was a member of Waresboro United Methodist Church.
He is the son of the late John Simmons and Ida Mae Crosby Simmons.
He is survived by his wife, Faye McCarthy Simmons of Waycross; a step-son, Allen Smith (wife Nancy) of Waycross; three daughters, Paula Nipper (husband Gene) of Waycross, Gail Simmons of Baxley, and Debbie Hendricks (husband Simon) of Waycross; 14 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday (August 8, 2003) at Waresboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Waresboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Music Funeral Home.
