Mr. Joseph E. (Joe) Simmons, Sr., 75, died early Thursday morning (May 15, 2003) at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL following a short illness.
He was a native of Trenton, NJ but had resided in Ware County most of his life. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Lee Conner Simmons and his parents, John Simmons and Ida Mae Crosby Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was a retired master sargeant with the U. S. Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam War. He was a member of Pineview Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
The survivors include his wife, Audrey Williams Simmons of Waycross; three daughters, Deborah Simmons Thrift (husband Billy) and Connie Lankford both of Waycross, Felicia von Hagn (husband John) of Elmiria, NY; two sons, Joseph E. Simmons, Jr. (wife Cathy) and Steven Bruce (Doozer) Simmons (fiancee Mary Wilson) both of Waycross; one brother, David R. Simmons (wife Faye) of Waycross; nine granddaughters, Karen Williamson Williams (husband Frasier), Kimberly Simmons, Mandy Thomas, Amanda Dunn, Emily von Hagn, Elizabeth von Hagn, Cindy Smith, Connie Wilson, and Marty Wilson; six grandsons, Benji Thrift (wife Amanda), Chad Thrift (wife Nikki), Jes Simmons, III, Andy Thomas, Cliff Gay, and Austin Lankford; six great grandchildren, Kalee Graham, Devin Williams, Dominick Williams, Dalton Thrift, Whitney Thrift, and Frasier Williams; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Friday night from 6 until 8 o'clock. The Etta Crosby Sunday School Class are requested to meet at the funeral home Saturday at 1:40 p.m. to serve as honorary pallbearers.
