Obituary

Mr. James W. "Jim" Swindell, 83, died Saturday night (June 22, 2013) at Hospice House Satilla following an extended illness.

He was a native of Marion County, FL and had made his home in Waycross since 1959. He was the son of the late David Eugene Swindell and Nancy Brooks Swindell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, David Eugene Swindell, II.

Mr. Swindell was an active member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Hustler's Sunday School Class, and had served as Deacon. He was honored by being named the Man of the Year in 2008 by First Baptist Church.

He had formerly worked twelve years with the Georgia Forestry Commission and then retired as a supervising State Fire Marshall in November of 1985 after twenty two years of service. He then became the first field agent with the Georgia Arson Control through the Georgia Insurance Commissioner and Safety Fire Commisioner in 1988 and retiring in 2009 after twenty plus years of service. He had graduated from the Forestry Division Branch of the University of Florida and received his Law Enforcement training from the University of Louisville. He had also served in the United Sates Navy.

He was one of two founders of the Georgia Arson Seminars which have been held for more than 40 years. He had also been honored by Georgia Arson Control, Inc. by having a scholarship named after him. This scholarship is awarded annually at the Southeast Georgia Arson Seminar for essay recognition. This is the only such scholarship that was named for a person while they were alive. He was also a recipient of the Waycross Exchange Club's Peace Officer of the Year Award and was a member of the Clement Evans Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp # 64.He also enjoyed making home-made knives and selling them at area craft shows.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Bobbye M. Swindell of Waycross; a daughter, Dottie S. Hackworth (husband Bill) of Waycross; a son, James Eugene "Gene" Swindell (wife Laura) of Brunswick; a granddaughter, Amanda Hackworth of Culpepper, VA; 3 step-grandchildren, Greg Hackworth (wife Brandy) of Fishersville, VA, Chris Romine of Port St. John, FL, and Jennifer Stites (husband Mike) of Diamond Head, MS; 4 step-great grandchildren Nathan Hackworth, Conner Hackworth, Garrett Head and Emily Head, and numerous cousins and other relatives.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 702 Elizabeth St., Waycross, GA 31501 or to Hospice House Satilla C/O Hospice Satilla, 808 Evergreen Way, Waycross, GA 31501.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Members of the Hustler's Sunday School Class are asked to gather at the church at 10:40 AM Wednesday to serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Wednesday at First Baptist Church.
