Delman L. (Dick) Minchew died at his home on Sunday (December 21, 2014) after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 9, 1931, to the late Jacob R. Minchew and Mary L. Carter Minchew. Dick was a 1948 graduate of Wacona High School. He graduated from Georgia Southwestern University in 1950; and graduated from Emory University Law School in 1953. He was a graduate of the Military Law Program, University of Virginia in 1954. Dick received the Senior Award in Scholastic Achievement, Emory Law School. He earned his certificate in Law in February 1953, and he went on with his first position in law as an Assistant to the Attorney General on the State of Georgia.

Mr. Minchew served on active duty with the JAGC of the US Army from October 1953 through November 1955 at Ft. Benning, GA. He attended the Judge Advocate General's School in Virginia, and at Ft. Stewart, GA. While at Ft. Stewart, he served as a Chief Trial Counsel from February 1954 through November 1955. He received a Letter of Commendation while at Ft. Stewart for his position as Trial Counsel of General Courts Martial. After his military service, he returned to his hometown of Waycross and established his private law practice. He was elected to the position of Solicitor, City Court of Waycross in 1965, for the term beginning in 1966. He proudly served in this position for 20 years before retiring. Dick practiced law in Waycross from 1955 until health problems caused his retirement in early 1997.

Those who knew Dick, knew he was a "Yellow Dawg Democrat." He managed a successful campaign in 1966, for W. S. Bill Stuckey, for a United States Congressional seat. He was also a Delegate to the 1968 Democratic Convention. He served in many capacities in both local and state Democratic committees and offices. He also served a term on the Ware County Board of Elections.

He was honored to serve as Worshiper Master of the Frank C. Folks Masonic Lodge #192 in Waycross.

Dick's love of Bluegrass music was legendary! He traveled throughout Georgia, Florida and the Southeast, attending Bluegrass music festivals until his health prevented him from doing so. He was happiest when he was surrounded by musicians, "picking" Bluegrass and country music!

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Katy Brooks Minchew; four children, Deborah Minchew Owen, Jacob R. (Dickie) Minchew (wife Cyd Gassett Minchew), Katherine Minchew Collins, and Rebecca Minchew Stanford (husband Lee Stanford); eight grandchildren, Anna Brooke Badis (spouse Brent), Thomas Dante Smith, Katy H. Minchew, Ryan Smith, Katelyn E. Dewberry, Rebekah C. Minchew, Kristopher D. Owen and Gareth L. Stanford; two great grandchildren, Kenzley A. Mr. Minchew is preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Minchew, Astor W. Minchew (wife Marion), John R. Minchew (wife Lucile), Lamar W. Minchew, Mike Minchew (wife Geri), and Vida Smith (husband Milton).

Dick created a legacy both in the Legal system of Waycross/Ware County, and for his family. Well-known for his outgoing personality and dynamic court-room presence, he blazed new trails in criminal law in this region. As for his family, he created a lasting legacy of love and laughter, and a desire to champion for the underserved and needy. He will be dearly missed!
